Victories in Palisades Fire

A lot of people, including us are under insured, especially when it comes to the loss of use coverage. We need everything we can get to not only pay rent for the next 3 years, but rebuild. This is critical and we don’t need to be told what someone else values our belongings at when we never intended to loose them. Everything I’ve worked for shouldn’t be depreciated.

We, the survivors of the Palisades Fire, lost everything—our homes, our belongings, and our sense of security. Now, as we try to rebuild our lives, we are faced with another devastating challenge: the burden of itemizing every single personal belonging in order to receive the insurance compensation we rightfully deserve. For those who have lost everything, this process is not just overwhelming—it’s nearly impossible. Expecting survivors to recall and document every item, from furniture to family heirlooms, places an unfair burden on those already dealing with unimaginable loss. Insurance companies should provide fair and reasonable payouts without forcing fire victims to relive their trauma through excessive documentation requirements. We urge insurance companies and policymakers to implement a fairer claims process—one that acknowledges total loss and provides equitable settlements without unnecessary delays or roadblocks. Survivors should be able to focus on rebuilding, not battling for the compensation they are entitled to. Together, we can push for change and ensure that no one has to fight for what is rightfully theirs after such a devastating loss. #FairPayoutsNow #RebuildWithDignity

I am a victim of Palisades, and I pay a high premium to State Farm. If an event occurs and we are denied compensation for loss of view, personal property damage, and property damage, then what is the point of having insurance? We should not have to fight for what we rightfully deserve. State Farm should honor our claims and provide the compensation we are entitled to.

After experiencing a devastating loss like we have, it feels like a punishment to be required to list every item that we lost. Due to the magnitude of people effected by this tragedy, it seems fitting to allow us to collect the full value of our policy for which we have been loyally paying for so many years. Now is not the time to nickle and dime us.

Thank you for this petition to help and support us who have lost our homes and our memories; the last thing we need is to struggle with our insurance companies!

Fire Survivors Deserve Fair Insurance – No Full Inventory Required! When disaster strikes, fire survivors should not have to relive their trauma by providing a full inventory just to claim insurance for lost personal belongings. Requiring detailed lists and receipts is an unnecessary burden when people have lost everything. Insurance companies must adopt fairer policies that recognize the devastation survivors face. We demand streamlined, compassionate claims processes that prioritize recovery, not red tape.

At the time of signing of our individual home insurance policies, both we as policyholders, and the insurance company mutually agreed upon the personal property coverage limit. It is unreasonable and unfair for insurance companies to require policyholders to provide a detailed inventory of their personal property including price in order to receive the full payout of the perusal property maximum. As a senior citizen, I have accumulated many items over the years, having lived in my home in Altadena for an extended period. I don’t know about you, but I can hardly remember what I purchased just last week. Yet, insurance companies expect me to itemize every item. This requirement is neither right nor just and must be abolished.

As Commissioner Lara said himself, making an inventory of lost mementos is "inhumane." Please consider waiving this painful, traumatic task from our already endless to do list ahead.

Those of us with insurance renewals early in the year are already seeing the required coverage levels jumping 30% due to inflation. Had the fires happened a couple weeks later we would have a lot more coverage in place. All of us are underinsured. The extended coverage covers only a fraction of the 2024-2025 inflation increase, much less surge demand pricing.
