My wife is 78 and, only for the fact that we took part in the NHS Galleri trial which was set up to provide early cancer diagnosis, she was fortunate to have her early hormonal breast cancer identified in March this year and then fast tracked to see a breast consultant/surgeon to have a successful mastectomy operation in June. If this had not been the case then who knows what the outcome might have been!
I’d just assumed that a mammogram wasn’t necessary after 71 and wouldn’t have asked for one. If the petition achieves nothing else, you will have alerted many people. Thank you so much!
At 72 I was refused a mammogram and was told by doctor I didn't have a lump. I had a thickening. Turned out he was a trainee and my wonderful doctor picked it up. Within weeks I had operation and straight onto chemo. Don't take no for an answer.
When I was diagnosed last year 2023, I was 73 and hadn't had a screening since I was 67 as the invite automatically stopped on my 70th Birthday. I consider myself one of the lucky ones as I thought something was amiss and persisted with my GP.
My Mom and my Sister-in Law both died from breast cancer ,i am 71yrs old now but i still worry about breast cancer ,when you get your Mamogram clearance it's such a relief, i'd like to keep it going.
As a breast cancer survivor I would feel so much safer knowing that screening would continue past 71. When treatment stops one feels alone and vulnerable, and left with the doubt that the cancer could return. No one should have to live with that worry.
