Allyship is speaking out but it’s also showing up for our communities. It means being willing to care about communities outside of our own because we know as humans we are all connected. Mess with RGV and you mess with us all.
I care about this issue and not only this current issue but everything that impacts our environment. I love the outdoors. It saddens me when I read this type of stories. Soon there will no clean water here or anywhere in this plant. Rivers all over the state of Texas are being polluted or maxed out due to over construction of houses. We need to advocate for our children and grandchildren.
It seems that during the pandemic, our systems have been falling apart and cities have neglected certain duties that they were taking care of pre-pandemic. Our systems are failing us, whether it be clean water, proper preventative care from floods, proper animal control care, etc. The list goes on and on. We were not warned of the last flood and many were displaced, ripped of their transportation, and put in dangers way. This is just one example of our falling, failing systems.
My 2 year old son was just diagnosed with leukemia this February. We moved here, with our 3 girls, from southern California in the summer of 2021 thinking this would be a better place for them. I had no idea the effects of the pollution here would be worse than where we were.
As a public health official this matters to me because I was born and raised in the RGV and I know and understand the importance of environmental health and the impact it’s doing in our area.
We have lived off of standard mill road since 1994, my mother in law lives next door since the early 60’s WE have NEVER seen the water this high. Not even in 2016 flooding. Something has to be done.
