I converted to Catholicism back in 2012 but it was until I started going to the Latin mass at Saint Margaret Mary where I fell more in love with my Catholic faith. I have gotten married at St Margaret Mary and baptized all my children there. It saddens me that the Institute of Christ the King will no longer remain in Oakland. Please Bishop Barber reconsider your decision and let us stay. You are in our prayers.
I have been here at St Margaret Mary’s with the Institute of Christ the King since 2005. The first 15 years, I served in the Magnificat and Sacred Heart choirs, and I’ve also been in the Sacred Heart Society, the lay branch of the Institute, since 2011. I’m the first Sacred Heart Society member from Oakland. I believe then Bishop Vigneron’s intention to establish us at St Margaret Mary’s was a wise decision, following in the footsteps of Fr Kozina, establishing a central location in the diocese for the beautiful, reverent & continuous celebration of the Latin Mass liturgy. The Institute is a family of believers who support the Pope, the Church and the Catholic tradition we have received from Our Lord, Jesus Christ. We are in the barque of St Peter, even though it may have holes poked in it from the inside, we are in it. I have seen my friends come to be baptized, and receive the other sacraments of the Church at the hands of our canons; I know that they are holy priests, fully dedicated to serving Christ’s mission. I urge you to keep them here. Your Excellency, you are in my prayers.
Please seriously reconsider this your Excellency. My faith has deepened and grown beyond what i could have imagined attending the ICKSP Masses over the past 17 years. I have deep gratitude for the ICKSP. The Priests feed the sheep at Christ's direction wonderfully. There's a beautiful garden in the Diocese of Oakland bearing sumptuous fruit. The Priest offers Catechism for 1st Communion, Confirmation, and adults! The Priest has monthly gatherings for an adult mens group and a young adult group and for all after Mass monthly on Sunday. There is a reception after Mass every Sunday that everyone loves! There's so many young families with children and babies - my eyes fill with tears and my heart with joy at Mass. There are weddings, baptisms, 1st Communions and Confirmations. The Priest leads a monthly devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and several Novenas throughout the year. The Institute offers summer camps for boys and girls every summer. They arrange for the faithful to attend the Walk for Life in SF every year. The church is full on Sunday! Removing the ICKSP will hurt many families. Please do not uproot this lush garden growing and bearing much fruit in Oakland. I will be loyal to the Institute for their service to our Lord, for all they have done for me, and for others. I will go to St Vincent in San Rafael for Mass if they are not in Oakland.
Btw why are you doing this? It doesn't make sense and is rather confusing. You are in our nightly rosary group prayers.
I’m adding my voice to express my heartfelt disappointment with this unexpected slap on the face to the Institute of Christ the King that for 20 years has served this community.
Not a very compassionate and grateful way of the Bishop to say “thank you.”
Instead…..Leave because now we have a vast pool of trained priests that can replace you”
After 20 years there’s an abundance of “trained” priests? Why don’t they get assigned to other parishes and enrich other communities with the beautiful tradition and reverence of this sacred Mass?
I will definitely follow and support the Institute at their new home.
VIVA CRISTO REY!!!!!
I am a Traditional Catholic who usually goes to the ICKSP Immaculate Heart of Mary Oratory in San Jose for the TLM Mass on Sundays, and like many others here in the Bay Area, the ICKSP has changed my spiritual life for the better because of that. The decision of the Diocese of Oakland to remove the ICKSP would have a profound negative impact on the spiritual lives of many Catholics and the TLM community in the Bay Area.
The Traditional Latin Mass is what brought me back to the Church after nearly a decade of being away, and St. Margaret Mary, along with the ICKSP have been instrumental in part of it. I left the church as a teenager and returned in my mid-20s and was confirmed in the Traditional Rite by his Excellency himself; Bishop Barber back in 2017. St. Margaret Mary also hosted his Eminence; Cardinal Burke previously to a packed church. The ICKSP and St. Margaret Mary are one of the few TLMs in the Bay Area and I humbly ask that his Excellency prayerfully re-consider moving the ICKSP to San Rafael.
I was affected by the shut-down of the ICKSP here in Chicago and have to travel out-of-state just to attend the Mass of All Time with the ICKSP. The ICKSP has provided a spiritual home for me, as for many others. The beauty and reverence of the liturgies uplift the soul to God--giving He Who Is right worship in this act of practicing the virtue of religion, properly understood. It would be a shame for yet another ICKSP parish to be shut down while elsewhere liturgical abuses abound in the Church: won't anyone stand against it? May the ICKSP remain at this parish 🙏
Faithful who prefer the Traditional Latin Mass is a growing demographic. We need MORE Bay Area churches celebrating the Latin Mass. It makes practical sense to keep St. Margaret Mary as it is, with ICKSP and ADD an additional Diocesan Latin Mass church to the Oakland Diocese. The St. Margaret Mary Extraordinary Form Masses are very full every Sunday. Could the Diocese provide an additional church where the TLM can be celebrated with a Diocesan priest? There are a number of churches in our diocese with very low attendance. This is an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" situation, where the ICKSP presence has created a wonderful environment that should not be disturbed. Meanwhile, please direct reorganization and repurposing efforts to the churches with shrinking membership. Select one to shift toward daily Latin Mass and see how it goes - this would allow continuity of spiritual guidance and inspiration to the St. Margaret Mary congregation. Let us know how we can help - organizationally, financially - what is needed? We are sending up our fervent prayers.
I am one of the oldest current Altar Boys here in Oakland, this mass has been instrumental in developing my faith as well as my character and has helped so many people rediscover the beautiful Traditional Latin Mass.
