ASL is my first language. Although I am not deaf, I stand by those who absolutely need interpreters. I didn't learn ASL till I was an adult because I was born and raised on Army bases in the 70s. My dad was a career soldier and Vietnam vet. There weren't any programs for families that moved as often as we did. Closed captions on live broadcasts are incomplete and full of typos/mistakes. Sometimes, the captions fall behind, so we lose several lines of information (they're called "craptions"!). An ASL interpreter fills those gaps and we get the full information during emergencies.

If there's an ASL interpreter there, they not only fill in gaps, they INFORM the viewer.

I am well educated like many of my deaf friends are. I was sick to my stomach reading the ignorant comments that were made from uneducated hearing Americans stating that interpreters are no longer needed since we have Close Caption (CC). CC works only for pre recorded shows / movies. It does NOT work well or properly for live covered events. Interpreters are NOT a distraction. They are my life line to surviving in this hearing world. Charlie Kirk and his supporters have only proven their lack of education when it comes to the 3rd leading language in America.

Even if we ignore the problems with captioning, especially live captioning, it is idiotic and dangerous to remove access to emergency briefings and important information. These misconceptions and opinions are the kind of thing that create harm and perpetuate the problems that deaf people face when it comes to getting access. FOLLOW THE LAW.

It is absurd to make such a comment, especially when it only leads to a desire to remove accessibility to fellow Deaf Americans. The last thing I would ever want to see is more Americans deprived from the same news everyone is getting - simply because they cannot hear the information being presented. Think about what you would want during an emergency: wouldn't you want to know what's going on? What to do? Where to go? What are my next steps?
Removal of ASL interpreters deprives them from the same access as everyone else. Period. How dare he try to use his platform to push this disgusting narrative.
