I'm a Ricky kinnie. I don't have the disability that Ricky has/had, but I am selectively mute, and I love Ricky. If they remove his disability, that sort of ruins his character. I'm autistic and ADHD, and this just offends me so much.
As a disabled person, this is absolutely unacceptable. Having proper representation is important. Providing the proper needs for somebody is important. Showing acceptance is important. What the McCarter theater has done is unbelievable. Theatre should be accessible for all.
Disabled actors being less commonly hired and outright avoided by directors because of their disability is an occurrence that I've seen happen way too many times, and the role of Rickey Potts is one of the few where they get the spotlight.
