Protect your Children's Future, and Stop the School Aid Madness
The Issue
One hundred and ninety-three school districts across New Jersey will see millions of dollar in state education cuts under the Governor’s proposed FY 2021-22 budget, including 20 school districts in Hunterdon County.
My colleagues on the Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners, are calling on Governor Murphy to Stop The School Aid Madness coming out of Trenton.
For the last year we have been crippled by the Covid-19 Public Health Emergency. We have lost friends, loved ones, our businesses and jobs. Unfortunately for many of us parents, our children suffered the most over the year. Not being able to go to school and socialize; the numerous struggles of online education, long term effects of this Public Health Emergency have certainly not been fully seen yet.
This year, the state is proposing cutting school aid to Hunterdon County schools by $2.6 million dollars, while increasing school aid for most other districts in the state by over half a billion dollars.
Freezing aid at last year’s level would not stop the madness for Hunterdon County of restoring $8.4 million lost over the last four years, but it would at least slow it down.
At the March 16th Hunterdon County Commissioner’s meeting, I introduced a resolution calling on thirteen other Boards of Commissioners where school aid is being cut to send resolutions to the legislators representing their counties, which comprise better than half the members of the legislature, demanding that budget language be inserted in the FY 22 budget that will protect our school children, property taxpayers and teachers from these aid cuts.
While the Board has taken many steps to effectively combat this flawed legislation, we need your help to protect the future of all children throughout Hunterdon.
We need your help, your voices, to call on Governor Murphy and make him hear, loudly and clearly that Hunterdon County is paying attention, and WE deserve action.
