Stand with the residents of South Bend Estates Mobile Home Park

The Issue

Help us stop the South Bend Estates MHP, LLC from displacing over 50 South Bend Estates residents without a dignified time line.

In September 2023, South Bend Estates mobile home park residents came together to create a group of United Residents of South Bend Estates after the property management of South Bend Estates MHP, LLC sent a letter stating that the park community would be closed and destroyed, for what we believe, is to benefit the property's commercial potential.

The South Bend Estates MHP is located next to the South Bend Airport and according to public documents, the St. Joseph County Airport Authority District Board approved the purchase of the mobile home property parcel numbers on August 31, 2023. There being no questions, comments or discussion, the motion carried with a unanimous vote.

The residents of South Bend Estates MHP were not invited to the meeting and had no opportunity to present any questions, comments or discussion on the matter.

Residents of the South Bend Estates mobile home park deserve to have a dignified timeline given the abrupt nature of the displacement. Many are on fixed incomes or are elderly and face significant medical, physical and economic challenges. To ask the more than 50 families currently living in this community to move from a place that many have called home for decades in less than a year is profoundly traumatic and destabilizing. Many have nowhere else to go. Furthermore, the South Bend Estates MHP, LLC argument that a third party company and representative Jim Murro can act as a resource to assist in relocation is unacceptable. The size of the caseload simply cannot be handled by one person nor can it be a fair process for all.

The displacement from the South Bend Estates MHP, LLC is telling us that we are not worth investing in and they prefer to put us out and demolish the place we love and have made our home. We are not numbers nor a vacant lot. We have lives and memories here and we have all invested in our homes and would like to continue to do so in a dignified way.

We ask that you sign this petition and stand with the residents of South Bend Estates MHP in their fight to extend their move out timeline.

Renters in the community should receive monetary compensation to assist with relocation costs.

Those that own their mobile homes further ask for monetary consideration for their property in addition to the compensation for relocation costs.
