Stop the Closure of the Inglewood Aquatic Center

Stop the Closure of the Inglewood Aquatic Center

The Issue

Help Us Save the Inglewood Pool!

On October 8, 2024, Calgary City Council voted 8-7 to close the Inglewood Aquatic Centre, citing a 2019 decision to cut $60 million from the budget. However, the city failed to extend pool hours, promote the facility, or keep it open until the MNP Community & Sport Centre expansion is complete. Closing the Inglewood Pool will have a significant impact on our community and pool users across Calgary.

The city claims low usage, but this is misleading as Inglewood’s operating hours were drastically reduced. They also cited $600,000 in mechanical repairs as justification for the planned closure on December 22, 2024. There is no actual estimate to back this amount up, from the city. The city administration also confirmed there’s no imminent risk, and the pool can continue operating without immediate repairs.

On November 18, we were informed by a city councillor that, administration is now stating the mechanical repairs, will only cost between $125,000-$150,000.

This decision to close down the Inglewood pool, is short-sighted, ignoring the area’s increasing density and fiscal responsibility. The city plans to spend a minimum of $2 million to demolish the pool, instead of investing in the communities that it represents, or at very least keeping the pool open until MNP’s expansion is complete.

The Inglewood Pool is a lifeline for children, families, and seniors, providing affordable fitness opportunities. A fraction of the $57.5 million allocated for MNP’s expansion could cover repairs, ensuring the pool’s continued operation.

Inglewood Pool serves many, especially seniors, children, and people with disabilities. The alternative—MNP—is a 45-minute walk, double the entrance fee, and already over capacity. Closing Inglewood would deny many people access to affordable aquatic services that support their physical and mental well-being.

We urge the City of Calgary to reconsider. Saving the Inglewood Pool is an investment in our community’s future and a resource for health and wellness.

Please help us by signing and sharing this petition. Together, we can keep the Inglewood Aquatic Centre open for generations to come. 💧
