ATTENTION US VETERINARIANS: Help Ban Horse Slaughter

ATTENTION US VETERINARIANS: Help Ban Horse Slaughter
The Issue
ATTENTION US VETERINARIANS YOU MUST READ THIS!!
Our beautiful American horses are suffering up to seven days crammed in to over-crowded stock trailers, (often up to 50 horses, which should only hold 8-10) with no food or water to be whipped and beaten on arrival at foreign slaughterhouses. As a result, many arrive severely injured or even dead from the journey alone. The suffering doesn’t end there! Once they arrive, the horses unable to walk are dragged by their back legs. They are given a botched captive bolt to the head (they miss over 80% of the time), while still alive they are pulled up on pulleys upside down, macheted in the spine to stop them moving, before suffering up to eight minutes as they are dismembered alive!
We are currently working on passing legislation to permanently ban this barbaric practice. The bill when passed will permanently ban horse slaughter here in the USA and the shipment of our American horses to Canada and Mexico to be brutally slaughtered for human consumption.
The bill is currently before Congress, HR3355 the SAFE Act (Save America’s
Forgotten Equine) but has been stalled in the subcommittee due to major opposition by the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA) and American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). This is why we need your help!!
The AVMA (click to see full AVMA letter) and the AAEP (click to see full AAEP letter) both recently submitted letters to congress in opposition to the HR3355 SAFE Act indicating they feel that shipping a horse to slaughter is considered “humane euthanasia”. It is the true opposite of humane. It is savage and barbaric and the worst type of cruelty a sentient being could suffer.
Above are just some of the very egregious issues with the process and certainly not all encompassing, but based solely on these items alone, it is clear that, contrary to the stance that the AVMA and AAEP have taken in their recent submissions, this is by no means anything close to humane euthanasia. As a veterinarian, a part of your oath is to "benefit society through the protection of animal health and welfare, and the prevention and relief of animal suffering.”
As such, we are looking to have the support of all ethical and caring veterinarians in our effort to stand up to the AVMA and AAEP and their shameful stance on this important issue, so we can provide dignity and respect for our lovely American horses. Please join us by signing this petition today!
PLEASE ONLY SIGN THIS PETITION IF YOU ARE A VETERINARIAN in the US!!
If you are not a veterinarian, wish to get additional information or want to help support us in other ways, you can visit our website at www.horsesinourhands.org where you can also submit an email directly to your Senators or Congressional Representative.
