HELP SAVE OUR GREAT LAKES THROUGH THE 2022 BOND ACT

HELP SAVE OUR GREAT LAKES THROUGH THE 2022 BOND ACT
The Issue
On November 8th, the New York State’s Clean Water, Clean Air, Green Jobs 2022 Bond Act unlocked over $4.2 Billion of funding to help mitigate climate change.
We are NYERGL, New Yorkers for Enhanced Restoration of the Great Lakes, an unregistered non-profit organization advocating for the 2022 Bond Act funds to assist in protecting the Great Lakes bioregion. Our goal is to ensure that the Bond Act's funds are distributed for enhanced restoration of the Great Lakes. We’ve already developed a grassroots campaign to persuade our family members and fellow students to successfully pass the Bond Act, and now our goal is to ensure that adequate funding is allocated towards the Great Lakes to ensure their restoration, conservation, and protection. NYERGL has developed this Restore the Shore petition to pressure the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and newly elected Governor Hochul to ensure Bond Act funds are adequately allocated to protecting our phenomenal Great Lakes.
Public opinion matters. Your voice can make a difference. Sign this petition now to support our efforts to restore and protect our Great Lakes!
Factors Threatening Our Great Lakes:
- Lake Erie’s toxic algae blooms of cyanobacteria (Also known as blue-green algae).
- Exposure to PCBs, Dioxin, and Mirex through the consumption of fish in Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
- Invasive Species, like zebra mussels, harm native life and damage crucial economic sources like the tourism, fishing, and boating industries.
- Increase in storms, storm intensity, and extreme weather events has caused flooding and damage to shorelines.
- Safe access to drinking water, unrestricted swimming, recreation, and healthy pollutant free habitat is at risk.
About the Bond Act:
- Potential to provide over $4.2 Billion in funding.
- Marginalized communities are denied access to clean water and air, and so 35% of the Bond’s investments will fight to stop this injustice.
- The Act will also improve public transportation, bridges, roads, and create 100,000 local jobs.
