Enhance safety measures on London buses and tubes

The Issue

My father’s phone was recently stolen while travelling on the London Underground. It was a distressing experience that left our family feeling vulnerable and concerned. Unfortunately, incidents like this are becoming increasingly common. Petty theft and other forms of crime are rising across London’s transport network, affecting thousands of ordinary commuters.

Public transport should be a safe and reliable way to travel — whether people are going to work, school, or simply moving across the city. No one should have to worry about their belongings being stolen in broad daylight.

According to recent data from the British Transport Police, thefts on the London Underground have increased by 25 percent in the past year. This is a worrying stat that calls for urgent action.

We are calling on Transport for London (TfL) to implement stronger safety measures to protect passengers and prevent further crime. Specifically, we propose the following four actions:

  1. Increase the presence of uniformed security staff across platforms, train carriages, and buses, particularly during peak travel hours.
  2. Expand CCTV coverage on trains, platforms, and in high-risk areas, to deter criminal activity and support investigations.
  3. Develop a real-time reporting system, such as a mobile app, to enable passengers to alert authorities to thefts or suspicious behaviour quickly.
  4. Run regular public safety campaigns to raise awareness, inform passengers, and encourage vigilance across the network.

These steps are practical and achievable. Taken together, they could significantly reduce the number of thefts and help restore public confidence in the safety of our transport system.

If you believe public transport in London should be safer for everyone, please consider signing and sharing this petition. Every signature sends a message to Mayor Khan that action is urgently needed for our London Transport.
