The Issue

In recent years, a troubling practice has emerged along the coastline of Southern California, where protected white sharks and other large shark species are being attracted, caught, and often harmed near public beaches and piers. These majestic creatures, essential for maintaining the balance of our marine ecosystems, are being targeted with heavy fishing gear, played, and frequently gaffed before release. This dangerous method involves using live bait and chum to lure sharks, inadvertently placing surfers, swimmers, and other beachgoers at risk.

In June 2026 the California Department of Fish and Wildlife proposed emergency regulations to regulate gear on public piers and beaches responding to targeted white shark  (and other large sharks) attraction and capture in Southern California.  With scientific concerns that warmer sea temperatures exacerbated by the impending super El Niño , the California Fish and Game Commission unanimously passed emergency regulations banning wire leaders and hooks larger than 1 inch on piers and within 1000 yards of shore.

The current emergency regulations, while helpful in mitigating some of the dangers, are not comprehensive enough to eliminate these issues completely. The risks posed to both the marine life and the safety of the public remain significant concerns that demand immediate and decisive action.

We are urge the California Fish and Game Commission to make the emergency regulations permanent before they expire in December. We are calling for the implementation of permanent, stronger regulations to ensure both shark conservation and public safety. Our goal is to enhance existing fishing regulations, prohibiting the use of heavy equipment, live bait, and chumming near public recreational areas. By doing so, we can protect our marine life and prevent avoidable accidents or fatalities along our shores.

Scientific studies have shown that sharks play a vital role in maintaining the health of ocean ecosystems. They help control fish populations and contribute to the overall biodiversity of marine life. Ensuring the safety and protection of sharks directly benefits the ocean environment and, by extension, our own well-being.

We urge policymakers to take concrete steps towards the preservation of sharks and the safety of beachgoers by enacting permanent and  stricter regulations and raising public awareness about responsible fishing practices. Together, by acting now, we can foster a safer, healthier marine environment for sharks and humans alike.
