The Center for Women's and Gender Studies at USC Upstate will be closed effective July 1. This administrative decision is, we believe, short-sighted and devalues the students who found their community in the Center's space. From innovative programming that expanded the horizons of knowledge for students, to creating a space with an inclusive and supportive climate, the Center met many needs that are not met elsewhere on campus. The Center has been a space where academic rigor was encouraged, both in classroom settings and more broadly in the community. It has been a space for students to find their voice, to hone their skills, and to meet others and develop a community of affirming peers. Closing the Center will undoubtably change the climate for many marginalized populations on campus, specifically women and gender or sexual minority students.
