U of Illinois: Evict Chick-Fil-A from the Illini Union!

The University of Illinois community has been fighting for over a year publicly to remove Chick-Fil-A and their homophobic policies from the Illini Union. It has been widely known that money from the organization is directly used to support anti-LGBT initiatives and organizations throughout the United States, in direct contrast to the respect for diversity that the University of Illinois maintains as part of its mission. Earlier this year the CEO of Chick-Fil-A, Dan Cathy, explicitly stated his stance against LGBT equality, since then many universities and organizations have withdrawn their support of the business to protect the values of equality in their educational settings/workplaces. The U of I cannot fulfill its goals of creating a safe and respectful environment for its student body while allowing such a business to operate on university grounds. The university union board has already found Chick-Fil-A to be in violation of inclusiveness and has advised the severing of ties to the business, we ask that this process be expedited and the values of respect for all university members be maintained.

We are not arguing against the Christian community, we are only saying that any organization, regardless of its heritage, that actively supports discrimination has no right being housed and supported as a part of a diverse university community. We would no more tolerate a racist, sexist, ageist, anti-Islamic, anti-Christian or any other discriminatory business operating on university property than we will a confirmed and proud anti-LGBT business. The University of Illinois exists as a safe place for ALL of its student and employee communities which means that NO discrimination against any group by a business profiting off of an ideal location or student dollars should be tolerated on campus.

      Friends,
Thanks to your voices and hard work we've reached over 600 signatures in under one week! We're well on our way to hitting out goal of 5,000 to deliver. Knowing this and seeing your work is both exciting and humbling. Together we can make the U of IL campus a safe place for all students, free from anti-equality businesses and send Chick-Fil-A packing off of university grounds. Our work along with our friends at 6 other university petitions have made some headlines recently and it's wonderful to see other students and news outlets(The Advocate, HuffPost, ThinkProgress) taking us seriously.

Thank you again for all of your work and for using your voice in this petition. If we can all spread the word around I have no doubt we'll meet our goal in no time!

      Cheers,
      James

Friends, Friends-of-Friends, Colleagues, and All The Great People Who've Made Their Voices Heard:

It's both exciting and inspiring to have hit such a landmark in under 24 hours. I wanted to reach out to thank you all personally for standing with me and making a real statement to the University of Illinois. For many people this is a touchy issue, I've frequently heard "my dollars don't really make a difference, so why does any of this matter?" This petition isn't seeking to chastise anyone for spending dollars where they want to, you make your own decisions and stick by them without reference to anyone else's opinions. However this petition does seek to tell a major public university that anti-equality businesses have no place being housed on the campus grounds of a university that has inclusiveness as a part of its educational mission.

Thank you again for all of your help and please keep passing this around!

      Your Friend,
      James

All members of the University of Illinois family deserve to feel appreciated and welcome for being themselves, so if someone or some company tries to go against this, they need to leave.

Why is thiA company that uses patron’s money to support hate groups of any kind should not be located in a place of learning. These hate groups promote bullying and worse, homosexuality is a natural part of human evolution, to promote hate against one class of humanity causes pain to all of humanity.s important to you?
