The Onion : Bullying and Homophobia are NOT a Laughing Matter

The Onion has crossed the line in their article "Best Part Of Gay 12-Year-Old’s Day Half Hour Spent Eating Lunch Alone On Staircase". and it needs to be removed. Bullying is a serious problem especially for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. Suicide due to LGBT bullying is becoming an epidemic.

According to GLSEN's 2009 National School Climate Survey:
- 84.6% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 40.1% reported being physically harassed and 18.8% reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation.
- 72.4% heard homophobic remarks, such as "faggot" or "dyke," frequently or often at school.
- Nearly two-thirds (61.1%) of students reported that they felt unsafe in school because of their sexual orientation, and more than a third (39.9%) felt unsafe because of their gender expression.

Even though this article was meant for humor, think about how a bullied LGBT youth feels after reading this. The article just makes things worse and helps out the bullies.

I don’t believe this article was written in jest, but I don’t think it went far enough in taking action. This poor boy is hiding because his classmates are bullying him. The article states that he is “receiving anonymous text messages from classmates telling him to kill himself”. Is anyone doing anything about this? What could have been an incredibly powerful article to stop bullying falls far short. The author appears to think it’s okay for a lonely, bullied boy to sit in a spot where he can run to the music room if he needs help. He does need help! His school is failing him, the author of this article failed him, and The Onion surely failed him.

      When did bullying become funny?

I was bullied as a kid, no child should have to feel this way.

I can appreciate the attempt at humor, and if only adults were going to see this, I wouldn't be signing this petition. But the effect this could have on a young victim of bullying who may be considering giving up could be devastating. Please do the compassionate thing and remove your article.
