In 2012, Utah Governor Gary Herbert launched an unprecedented attack on our public lands, suing the United States twenty-two times so as to seize control over more than 10,000 so-called "highways" crossing National Parks, wilderness and proposed wilderness. 

And he signed legislation demanding that the federal government hand over more than 30 million acres of public land owned by all American citizens to the State of Utah, including the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and millions of acres of spectacular redrock wilderness-quality lands.  The Utah Legislature has indicated that some of these lands would be sold outright to the highest bidder while others would be kept in state ownership but opened to oil and gas drilling, off-road vehicle use and extractive industries.
