Michael Schumacher's tragic skiing accident showed all too clearly how inadequate most helmets are in reducing head injuries. Homologation standards are antiquated, epidemiological data as to which injuries occur in which activites hardly exists, and the public incorrectly assumes that their head protection actually PROTECTS.

The FIA was responsible for developing a new-spec motor racing helmet that has already saved lives. The database, personnel, and research techniques used for that massive project could be leveraged to help other Federations, organisers, and homologating authorities to develop helmets that WORK.

Everyone who wears a helmet, for work or recreation, should be confident that his or her headgear provides the best possible protection for the task at hand. Until now, that confidence is being betrayed every day. The FIA is perfectly placed to take the lead on this vital aspect of public health. The time is now.
