The free exercise of religion is a constitutionally protected right. That right, however, is being infringed upon when a woman is not permitted to choose how, where and with whom she gives birth. There are many who view childbirth as not only non-medical, but religious and spiritual in nature. This understanding of birth as primarily religious in nature can be found to span many, if not most religious thought and dogmas. However, it is not incumbent on the individual to prove the validity of their religious conviction, but rather on the government to show a compelling interest in interfering with an individual's free exercise of religion. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM APPLIES TO CHILDBIRTH CHOICES!

    1. Update on Brenda Capps

The Kern County DA made an offer to Brenda's attorney today. It was unacceptable! They want her to take a plea, agreeing to probation, 200 hours community service, $1000 fine, and $20K reimbursement to the California Medical Board for their investigation (reportedly calculated at $40K).

It's a ridiculous offer. The Medical Board, who busted into Brenda's home and arrested her at gunpoint, took money, computer, and things completely unrelated to midwifery from her home. Some has never been returned. In addition the California Medical Board lied saying they had repeatedly warned Brenda not to practice. This never took place. In Brenda's 22 years of serving birthing women she has never had a complaint against her and never been warned to stop practicing.

Please keep sharing this petition with others! We need to continue the fight for BIRTH FREEDOM! Those who choose Religious Midwives deserve the right to practice their faith on their own terms, even as it applies to birth!

In honor of it being Passover, here's a quote from Sarah Zadok: "A midwife’s role, among other things, is to encourage a birthing mother to "let go" and allow herself to become a conduit for this great Force to flow through. Trust in the natural process of labor and in a woman’s body to birth normally and safely is the hallmark of midwifery care. Every culture and religion has their own words and metaphors to describe their reverence and awe of this process. But for Jewish midwives, this reverence stems from an understanding that birth is G‑dly in nature. Their faith in birth is inexorably bound with their faith in G-d"

Every day we hear about the dangers of cancer, heart disease and AIDS. But how many of us realize that, in much of the world, the act of giving life to a child is still the biggest killer of women of child-bearing age?

      -- Liya Kebede

      * The message of our campaign is "Make every mother and child count". This campaign is not just about health. It is also a powerful call for radical progress in women's rights and the rights of their children. Too often, the health of mothers and children does not count. In too many parts of the world, they are forgotten.

I have the right and every woman has the right and responsibility to her family and community to be educated and to educate others on the safety of birthing according to her convictions, with whom and where every she believes is safe.
