This fall, DOE representative Elizabeth Rose indicated that The Spruce Street School would absorb 2011 Kindergarten overflow from other Downtown Schools with Kindergarten waitlists. The Spruce Street School has been forced to accept 4 Kindergarten sections for Fall of 2011, 2 sections over its capacity, all in- zone students, without a waitlist. That fills 11 of our 20 classrooms with k-2 students only. We, the parents of The Spruce Street School say ENOUGH and NO! to further Kindergarten enrollment at Spruce for 2011. While we are grateful that the DOE (thanks to the support of our elected officials) has sited a new school for 2015 in the Peck Street Post Office to incubate in the Tweed Courthouse in 2012, we are DISMAYED that there is NO INTERIM SOLUTION FOR 2011 overcrowding. We urge our elected officials to join us in demanding that: 1. Spruce Street School be capped at 90 in zone general education kindergartners for 2011. 2. The DOE find alternate placement for other downtown waitlisted Kindergarten children for 2011. 3. The DOE create a Spruce Wait List for any in zoned Kindergarten children above the capped 90 and offer those children alternate placement.
