Please change the noise ordinance for the downtown area so that Chattanooga’s nightlife can remain and thrive.
The Issue
Chattanooga has one of the quietest noise ordinances in the country. To change that, we need you to speak up!
Chattanooga has a vibrant downtown with a growing nightlife economy that includes restaurants with outdoor patios, live music venues and an emerging street performer scene. This nightlife economy is currently in danger of not only becoming stagnant, but disappearing.
Our current noise ordinance does not allow anything above 50 db however normal conversation is measured at 60 to 65 db.
The downtown Chattanooga nightlife economy gives bartenders, wait staff, kitchen staff, security personnel, musicians, artists, and production staff jobs, and it encourages an active, walkable, enjoyable and social downtown environment. This nightlife economy also acts as a traffic generator for surrounding retail shops, art galleries and restaurants, who contribute millions of dollars a year in tourism dollars, sales taxes, property taxes and local pay wages.
The nightlife economy coupled with the outdoor offerings are now creating a cultural tourist who is coming from not only nearby cities such as Nashville, Atlanta and Birmingham, but also drawing visitors from across the entire Southeast and Midwest regions. In order for this type of tourism to grow, Chattanooga must be able to market live music and nightlife hotspots, which could disappear if action is not taken. The hotel motel tax revenue and restaurant sales that these tourists contribute to Chattanooga’s economy is integral to the growth of the offerings of downtown activities for all locals to enjoy as well.
