Support the creation of Newtown Plaza at Newtown and 30th Aves
The Issue
The triangular intersection of Newtown Avenue and 30th Ave is one of the most dangerous in all of Queens. Amidst a row of bustling neighborhood businesses, this intersection poses a threat to both drivers and pedestrians who must cross while assuming that vehicles may enter this area at any time.
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) has developed a proposal to convert this hazardous space into a plaza with chairs and plantings, creating an attractive village square. This proposal will create open space in a neighborhood that desperately needs it. Astoria is one of the most underserved neighborhoods for parks and open space in New York City, in addition to being the one of the most densely populated areas in Queens. And most Astoria residents who live south of Astoria Blvd and east of 31st St do not have access to open space within short walking distance.
Please voice your support for Newtown Plaza to Community Board 1 and to Council Member Vallone. You can find out more information about this project by visiting NYCDOT’s Facebook page for this project at www.facebook.com/newtownave
