From the Cuse Pit Crew: "We were able to successfully gather over 1800 signatures on our petition. Our petition was covered on every major news outlet (CNY Central, YNN, WSYR Channel 9, and Syracuse.com). We spread the message through our facebook page (www.facebook.com/CusePitCrew) and our website (www.cusepitcrew.org) As a result, Senator Valesky, who we were petitioning to sponsor legislation that would strengthen New York State law for neglected and abused companion animals, reached out to us and confirmed that he is indeed sponsoring the legislation. Here is what he wrote to us: 'Dear Cuse Pit Crew: Thank you for contacting me to express your support for a law that would create harsher penalties for animal abusers. I am aware of Grace’s story, and as a dog owner myself, I am sickened. I had the opportunity to meet with members of the Cuse Pit Crew, and indicated that I would be supportive of changing the law to increase penalties against anyone who neglects or abuses a companion animal. I am pleased to report that legislation has already been introduced (S.6730/A.9917)that would accomplish our common goal— allowing individuals charged with neglect, including failure to provide medical care, to be charged with a felony under the penal law. I have signed on as a co-sponsor of this legislation. I will join you in advocating for passage of this legislation in the upcoming 2013 legislative session which will begin in January. Again, thank you for bringing attention to this important issue. Sincerely, David J. Valesky State Senator'"

Please support Grace, a pit bull who was severely neglected and had to be humanely euthanized on October 6, 2012. We will not forget Grace and the emotional and physical pain and suffering she suffered as a result of her owner's neglect.

Currently those charged with abusing or neglecting companion animals are only subject to a misdemeanor charge under NYS Agriculture & Markets Law. We are asking that companion animals be moved out of NYS Agriculture & Markets Law into New York State Penal Law so that those charged with animal abuse or neglect could face a felony charge.

Because animals have rights too. Too many times I see it on TV and in the news where an animal is neglected or abused and the person gets a slap on the wrist! it is time to make this crime a felony! This cannot continue! Animals are innocent and have no voice! Animals love unconditionally and only ask for love, food, water, and shelter. When I see a human being not able to provide these basic needs they need to either give up the animal or be punished for the abuse. If this kind of stuff continues, people will just keep doing it!

I have a rescue dog that is a chocolate lab. He was abused as a pup and I have had him now for about 5 years. He is the most loving and happy dog. I don't know what I would do without him. It it wrong to think of pets as objects and abusing them should be a felony.
