This August, Governor Pence signed an executive order that ignores the will of more than 1.3 million Hoosier voters by establishing a new agency, the Center for Education and Career Innovation (CECI), to oversee education in Indiana. This new agency creates unnecessary bureaucracy, at taxpayer expense, making it almost impossible to coordinate education policy in the state.

The governor’s formation of this costly and redundant agency has already created gridlock in state government  --  a situation that is both unnecessary and irresponsible.

The CECI is a $5 million annual burden to taxpayers in a state that continues to cut funding to vital public school programs. Four of the CECI’s top employees are receiving six-figure salaries – substantially higher pay than the State Superintendent receives under Indiana law. And considerably more salary than the average Hoosier brings home.
