HTC Corporation/Qualcomm Inc: Release HTC EVO 3D's drivers/sourcecode related to 3D functions

HTC Corporation/Qualcomm Inc: Release HTC EVO 3D's drivers/sourcecode related to 3D functions

The Issue

We are reaching HTC and Qualcomm on behalf of the development community, and xda-developers.com, to ask for feedback about releasing HTC EVO 3D's drivers relating to its 3D functions (camera, video recording and watching 3D content from the screen).

While these functions work flawlessly on stock versions the device comes with (or the official Android 4.0 ICS update), their sources are kept proprietary and they are not being available fully and/or properly on HTC's official developer site (htcdev.com), limiting the compatibility of the feature to be available and depended completely on HTC's proprietary UI (HTC Sense) and its framework. This means that trying to build your own ROM based on anything else but HTC's stock ROM sources, like using official sources from Android's official Open Source Project (source.android.com), will lead to a device incapable of using the features HTC's costumers have bought the device, which are its 3D functions (which also defeat the whole point of buying an Android device and HTC having to do the job to provide sources for the device on htcdev.com). While not releasing these may or may not violate Android's GPL, it is surely violating the trust and relationship between HTC, their costumers and its loyal development community. While HTC EVO 3D owners and developers do understand and respect the fact that their device is out of HTC's software update plan policy and also understand that software updates take time and money to develop from a company, we are not going to demand a software update for our device. Instead, we want for HTC to at least do the right thing and release the drivers/source code needed so people from the community will be able to use all 3D functions of the HTC EVO 3D (camera, video recording and watching 3D content from the screen) on their own ROMs that are NOT tightly based on the stock ROM and don't need an old, unsupported version of the framework in order to work. From HTC's part, it is work that does not demand any time or trouble since it's something already available to them.

Another reason of this petition's importancy is the fact that inside the Android ecosystem there are not many devices that support the great 3D functions HTC EVO 3D offers as an Android device (Stereoscopic Camera and Screen). Providing all important sources for the phone opens up a whole new world for developing inside the Android ecosystem.

Thank You,
Klimis Ioannidis.
