Reverse the Decision to Put WiFi Routers in Our Schools

The Issue

There is a statewide initiative to install Wi-Fi routers in Rhode Island public schools.  We understand that the North Kingstown School Department has immediate plans to carry out this initiative.

·         Wi-Fi is another name for microwave radiation.  It is the same radiation that cell phones transmit and receive.

·         There is reason to believe that this technology is not safe.  The Bioinitiative 2012 Report (a report put out by independent scientists, researchers and doctors) lists 1800 studies showing the potential for biological harm from non-ionizing radiation-emitting devices like Wi-Fi routers and their connected devices.

·         The levels of radiation that our students and staff would be exposed to on a daily basis from Wi-Fi transmitters, are at levels of exposure that have never been studied and the possible effects of which are not yet understood.

·         WiFi radiation has been linked to symptoms such as headache, nausea, nosebleeds, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, racing heart, behavioral problems, damaged reproductive cells in females and males, developmental problems in children and degenerative diseases such as cancer.

·         These effects are more pronounced in children whose nervous systems and brains are still developing.

·         We acknowledge that there are many studies that have found no detrimental effects on human physiology from the transmitted radiation.   However, we feel as though the body of evidence that has found effects is enough to warrant a policy of precaution with this technology in our community.

·         We ask that the North Kingstown School Department review, evaluate and address the documented risks posed to both students and staff by the installation of Wi-Fi in school buildings.  We also ask that the North Kingstown School Department communicate the risks associated with exposure to wireless radiation to families for as long as wireless hubs are transmitting in our schools.
