Government - East Jakarta, Indonesia: Free Kirk Elliot Neville

    1. Petition by

Kirk Elliott Neville, 36, is a Briton who works as an English teacher in eastern Jakarta. He was detained February 15th for the possession of a one-gram (0.035 ounce) package and two joints of marijuana and could face between 4-12 years jail time for this. Kirk is concerned about the suffering of the world, has a passion to help, and has a passion to teach. It would be a big mistake to lock such a person away on such a minor offence. So this petition is to the Indonesian and UK governments to interceed on Kirk's behalf.

Under the anti-narcotics law in Jakarta, Kirk could face between four to 12 years' jail. These are extreme sentences considering the small amount of marijuana involved, as well as the character of the individual. In places such as the UK, possession of less than 3 grams is unlikely to result in any more than a mere confiscation and a written warning for the first two cannabis possession offences. There are many places around the world that allow up to a gram legally. Ruining a good persons entire life by locking them away for years based on one-gram of marijuana should not happen in this day and age.

Kirk is obviously not trafficking drugs. He has a good reputation and was providing a helpful service by educating people in Indonesia. He also has many diverse friends from around the world (obtained from his presence on the Internet) who respect him and who will vouch for his character. Kirk is concerned about the suffering of the world, has a passion to help, and has a passion to teach. It would be a big mistake to lock such a person away on such a minor offence.

This petition is to say we think it would be an extreme injustice to hold this man for such a length of time. This petition is a way to tell Indonesia that there is a whole community of people who care about the well-being of this person, that he is an ethical person of high character, and that he should not be held any longer for the offence. It's also a petition to tell the British embassy to support every action to free this man.

Please sign this petition and help free Kirk.

* Please show diplomacy if you comment. This petition is about pooling resources and collectively helping Kirk in any way we can.

Also, we have established contact with the embassy and with someone that will hopefully be able to deliver a letter to Kirk. No need to individually send out letters to the embassy at this point as they are now aware of our concern. I will let everyone know once more info is received on how else we can support and help Kirk! In the meantime keep plugging away at getting signers for this petition.

A video was made with this info in the comment area:

"Ok. I'm out of prison but still in Indonesia. I'm just one of countless millions of depraved people who have been incarcerated in prison at some point in their life for committing heinous crimes against the powers that be. I'm still traumatized by my experiences over the last few months so I'd rather just focus on my philosophy for the time being and I'd ask for understanding and privacy at this very difficult time for me. Oh and thanks for all the support. ;-)"

We've passed 500 supporters! We also received a letter back from Kirk stating that he's managing his situation well and that, currently, his jail sentence isn't nearly as bad as we may perceive it.

"The first sixty days after I was arrested were spent in a small cage and they were not fun at all but for the moment I am comfortable and well. Indeed, at times it can seem like I'm stranded in a rather dull and uninspiring men-only youth hostel and not imprisoned at all."

He says more on this and it's all good news!

      He goes on to say:

‪"I go to court, however, in two or so weeks so I am understandably nervous about that but for now I am just biding my time and trying to adjust to my new environment."

The short of it is, he's staying positive and seems to still be the person we know and care about!

    4. Actual News: Some contact has been made and some good news

A letter from the community was handed over to Kirk from the embassy (no response yet, but hope to hear back). We found out from the embassy that he's currently in Cipinang prison and that he is being told he's looking at 2-5 years (which is some good news compared to the 4-12. If sentenced, let's hope for the 2 rather than 5!). After his court case it's possible that he'll be moved so at this point we shouldn't send any care packages just yet. We also found out that his girlfriend has been visiting him and also some colleagues from work, so it's great that he's not entirely alone in Jakarta. A contact from the online community will be obtaining his girlfriends email address from the embassy - so we may be able to have a more direct flow of information and communication. He's still facing horrible conditions and disproportionate sentences, but any news like this is good news.

We are up to 488 petition signers. Let's break that 500 soon. Spread the petition, lets keep things going!

    5. We've reached the embassy!

Just letting everyone know that communication has been established with the embassy, so we did get their attention. They've asked that we consolidate emails from this point forward, so no need to directly send any yourself. Please get others to sign the petition and support the cause. It is extremely important that we pool resources. We have a letter that will hopefully get to Kirk and as soon as we receive information back we will let you know next steps, how individually we can help (other than the petition), and so on. Thank you all for your continued support and efforts.

As of this message we have 416 signers. Let's get it up to 500 soon and really make it stand out!
