March 2013

From Stephanie Muha: The students and papers have both been returned to the Chronicle. The students are busy working on next weeks issue and this weeks issue is back in the bins! They suspension lasted 22 hours and the press coverage was immediate and widespread. With the pressure from students and the media, the administration backed down and changed their story. The Daily Lobo also stopped print of their newspaper in a show of full support for the Chronicle and declared it would not resume print until the Chronicle was was back in action. The petition was just one small part of the victory, the media and students did most of it, but every signature helped!

The CNM Chronicle is the college newspaper, which is run and written by CNM students. This week they released an issue that was all about sex and sexuality and it was printed in an attempt to raise awareness about various sexual topics. The CNM administrators have suspended all staff members, removed all copies of the newspaper issue from its 7 campuses and banned this issue from all of the campuses. We are adults and we have the right to decide what we want to read, and CNM should not be allowed to censor the paper or the students in this way. In the sexuality section students freely answered questions and submitted pictures knowing they were going to be presented in the paper. They didn't have a problem sharing this most intimate detail, so why should CNM administrators care?

The suspension lasted 22 hours before the media coverage and student pressure (including this petition) won the day. The Chronicle is back in action and all of the papers are back in the bins! Woohooooo!

To punish someone after reinstatement sends the wrong message to students - they do not have freedom of speech!

Reissuing the paper is only half-way there!! Give the original writers their spots back writing for the paper, instead of "reassigning" them. The paper was probably CNM's best issue released--it was educational, well-written, creative, and brave. That's what writing is supposed to be--not stale and repetitive.

As a former University newspaper adviser and as a retired professional journalist, I support freedom of the press. I would urge these college administrators responsible for this to read the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court rulings supporting freedom of the press.
