Play Together for the Kids
The Issue
Pop punk and all-ages shows go together like summer and the Warped Tour. Blink 182, one of the most commercially successful pop punk bands of all time, recently announced an appearance in Vegas, playing a wine festival on Oct. 11. That’s kind of duck pajamas for their younger fans, plus I miss the days of getting to see the guys play smaller, more intimate shows. The kind of shows where they get to feed off of the crowd and everyone can have a huge “Josie” singalong.
So what we want to do is set up a “secret,” all-ages “PunksInVegas Presents:” Blink 182 show in Vegas while the band is in town that week (following up the previous PIV Presents shows featuring Jeff Rowe in 2012 and Jeff Rosenstock in 2014). An awesome, all-ages and locally-run venue has offered to host it. We have great, local bands eager to open it. And we have a legion of fans who guarantee it will be the most fun show of the year. The show would be free - but we would be accepting donations, all of which would be donated to local charity, as yet to be chosen.
Ideally this would be the full band, but we are also down for an acoustic show or, if need be, we have members of other Vegas bands ready to step up and back Mark and/or Tom for a set of Blink and side project songs. Don't worry Blink, we've got your back.
“But what’s in it for the band?” You might ask. Good question! For starters, I will make the band one of two sandwiches (their choice): Ham on rye or turkey on white. I can’t guarantee it will be the best sandwich but I can guarantee it will come with a side of chips. My wife will make them a batch of yummy cookies or cupcakes (she doesn’t know this yet). I will also pay for the guys to take a ride on the New York New York roller coaster and if they’re feeling crazy, I’ll drive them to Art of Flavors in my 2010 Elantra and buy them a maximum of three gelato scoops each. The Artistic Armory has also offered to give the band a Blink-themed painting. If you have something you want to donate to the prize pool, tweet it at @blink182 and @PunksInVegas.
