Don't force your workers to give up their Thanksgiving holiday to increase holiday profits.
The Issue
My friend works at Toys R Us and was excited to spend her first Thanksgiving with her son, who was in the NICU last Thanksgiving fighting for his life. Then she found out she was going to be working 4pm-3am on Thanksgiving, eliminating any chance she had of enjoying the holiday with her family. On top of that, her employers are taking away her breaks required by law, promising a shortened break "if there is time." She understood the Black Friday hype, but had no idea that Toys R Us would be taking her Thanksgiving away. My friend is a hard worker who says she loves working during the holiday season because of the spirit in the air, but losing Thanksgiving with her family took away her holiday spirit, and I'm sure there are many more workers who have similar stories and situations. Her job was threatened if she were to badmouth the company because of their holiday practices being about profits over people, so I'm speaking up for her and the thousands of other workers having to give up their holiday for the sake of profits. I urge you not to shop at Toys R Us on Thanksgiving, or anywhere for that matter, to let these big corporations know that the holidays aren't about gifts, or the best sales, or being first in line for the latest and greatest products; the holidays are about spending time with family. We may not be able to make a difference this year, but we can send a message for the years to come that staying open on Thanksgiving and forcing employees to sacrifice their holidays isn't worth it. Please sign my petition and let Toys R Us know this is not ok!
