私たちの祖先が長年耕してきた山口県下関市豊北町の土地が今、休耕地として多く残っています。この土地が十分に活用されておらず、その結果、地域の農業が衰退し、さらに人口の減少にも拍車がかかっています。日本全体でも農業自給率が低下しており、私たちの地域における農業の再興が必要です。これらの土地を再び農業に利用することは、地域全体の活性化へと繋がるのです。
休耕地を再び営農を行える土地に変えるためには、地域住民の協力と行政の支援が不可欠です。豊北町の美しい土地をそのままにしておくのではなく、有効に使い、価値を生み出すような取り組みが必要です。この土地を新たな農業の拠点とし、新たな生活と創造の場として使い、持続可能な農業を展開したいと思っています。
日本の農業自給率がわずか37.6%（令和4年度）である今、少しでも自給率を向上させるために、休耕農地の活用は緊急の課題と言えます。地域に眠る資源を最大限に活用し、地元の活性化を進めましょう。新しい作物の導入や、農業に興味を持つ若者たちを呼び込むプログラムを提案することも一つの方法です。

Much of the land in the Hohoku-cho area of ​​Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture—land cultivated by our ancestors for generations—now lies fallow. This underutilization has led to a decline in local agriculture and has further accelerated population loss. With Japan’s overall agricultural self-sufficiency rate in decline, revitalizing agriculture in our region is essential; putting this land back into productive use will drive the revitalization of the entire community.

With Japan’s food self-sufficiency rate standing at just 37.6% (as of the 2022 fiscal year), the utilization of fallow farmland is an urgent priority in our efforts to boost that figure. Let us make the most of the resources dormant in our community to revitalize the local area. Strategies could include introducing new crops or launching programs to attract young people interested in agriculture.

Transforming fallow land back into productive farmland requires the cooperation of local residents and support from the government. Rather than leaving the beautiful land of Hohoku-cho unused, we must take steps to utilize it effectively and generate value. We aim to turn this land into a new hub for agriculture—a place for new ways of living and creative endeavors—while fostering sustainable farming practices.
