Despite 18 states banning Single-Use Plastic ( which includes: plastic bags, cups, plates, plastic cutlery, small bottles, straws, plastic pouches etc), the use of such items is very rampant. As per a survey conducted by Toxic Links, 83% of people in metropolitan cities still use SUPs regularly, frequently or at least sometimes.

We filed an RTI, asking Central Pollution Control Board the following questions:

1. How many Polythene Plastic Bag Manufacturing Units/ Factories were granted NOC in the year 2017-2018, 2018-2019 & 2019-2020 respectively.

2. Please Provide the data if available of the total manufacture of Plastic Bags less than 50 microns in thickness in the year 2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020 respectively.

- As per, Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011 (as amended on 27th March 2018) :

a. Plastic Carry Bags less than 50 Microns of thickness are banned.                                              b. Carry bags made of recycled plastic or products made of recycled plastic shall not be used for  storing, carrying, dispensing or packaging ready to Eat or Drink Foodstuff

Our Food comes packed in Plastic products, most of which are of single-use plastic grade.                                  The poly bags which are usually used to carry food are mostly less than 50 microns in thickness. Restaurants generally pack salads and chutneys in very thin plastic pouches, which are again, less than the prescribed standards and is toxic.

 

WHY ZOMATO, SWIGGY AND OTHER POPULAR ONLINE FOOD ORDERING PLATFORMS LET VIOLATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS HAPPEN SO EASY?

WHY ZOMATO, SWIGGY DON'T PUT AN END TO THE USE OF SINGLE-USE PLASTIC IN THEIR FOOD DELIVERIES?

WHY ARE THE GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITIES FAILING TO IMPLEMENT THE LAWS?

DO WE REALLY HAVE TIME BEFORE WE START THINKING OF OUR ENVIRONMENT?

 

Join this campaign by making little efforts:

- Write letters to CPCB and other local authorities as mentioned under Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, and ask them about the implementation of regulations in your local area.

- Be the Role Model: By eliminating plastic from your life, you can influence many people around you while contributing less to environmental degradation. Even if you are able to change one person's lifestyle, it's a victory.

- Tweet Zomato, Swiggy using hashtags #plasticfreefooddelivery OR #plasticfreefoodpackaging

- The power of Social Media: Use your social media presence to influence people and let our voice amplify

- Be an Environmental Activist: By actively doing the aforementioned things, you might see a young Climate/ Environmental Activist in you.
