Reject Karpowerships

The Issue

We, the concerned citizens and environmental advocates, call upon the authorities to halt the implementation of the Karpowerships-SA projects in Nelson Mandela Bay, Richards Bay and Saldanha Bay. This development poses a significant threat to the fragile ecosystems and wildlife that call this area their home. We urge you to consider the following points of concern:

1. Protect Waders and Sensitive Habitats: The proposed development jeopardises the unique habitats in Richards Bay, including mud flats, mangroves, and sand banks, which are vital for the survival of wader populations. These habitats are crucial for foraging and breeding, and any loss or disturbance could have devastating consequences for these birds. We must not allow the destruction of these sensitive ecosystems that support the diverse birdlife of the area.

2. Prevent Pollution and Habitat Destruction: The presence of ships in the proposed Karpowerships-SA projects brings an inherent risk of pollution. Potential oil spills and ruptured undersea pipes could lead to irreversible damage to the pristine coastal environment. This pollution not only directly harms the waders but also threatens the entire food chain, disrupting the delicate balance of the ecosystem and endangering the diverse bird species that rely on this habitat for survival.

3. Safeguard African Penguins: The increased underwater noise levels resulting from the development could have severe consequences for African penguins in Saldanha Bay, a species of conservation concern. These noises disturb their foraging patterns, forcing them to exert more effort to find food, and ultimately reducing their reproductive success. The lack of a dedicated Underwater Noise Impact Assessment raises doubts about the effectiveness of proposed mitigation measures in protecting these penguins from the adverse impacts of the project.

We believe that the protection of biodiversity and the sustainability of ecosystems must take precedence over short-term energy solutions. We demand that the competent authorities reassess the Karpowerships-SA projects in light of these concerns, prioritising the preservation of our natural heritage and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

We believe that tampering with our oceans and compromising the well-being of marine life is unacceptable. We advocate for sustainable and renewable energy solutions that do not harm our precious ecosystems. It is essential that we prioritize renewable energy initiatives over projects that damage the ocean and its inhabitants.

Sign this petition to show your support for the protection of biodiversity and to call for the cancellation of the Karpowerships-SA projects. Together, let us send a clear message that the health of our environment and the welfare of our wildlife cannot be compromised!
