18 Jul 2017
In about 7 hours it will be the 7th day of Dr. Liu Xiaobo's passing. In Chinese custom, this is the day when the soul of the deceased will find his way back to the world, to bid his final farewell. The body was not supposed to be buried or cremated until this day has passed. Yet the Chinese authorities have denied Dr. Liu the respect he deserved, forcing the family to make do with a hastily arranged and secretive sea burial, and preventing friends from coming and saying their goodbye. And they even dare to blame it on "local customs", when Chinese customs is nothing of that sort. Up till today the family is still under tight surveillance and unreachable. As such it is up to us, friends and supporters of Dr. Liu Xiaobo, to give him the proper farewell he deserved. We are calling for people from around the world to participate in a Global Memorial on the 7th day of his passing (19th July), as per Chinese custom. Already places such as Hong Kong, London, Melbourne, Vancouver and Boston will be holding public ceremony, and please do join if you are nearby. For individual, you may take part via the following: 1. Place an empty chair, preferably by the sea or waterside (symbolizing the empty chair at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony of Mr. Liu Xiaobo) 2. Moment of silence, bowing towards the chair for three times (a gesture of highest respect for the death in Chinese custom) 3. Raise 3 fingers, symbolizing resistance, freedom and hope Individuals or groups may take a picture of them raising three fingers together with an empty chair, with any appropriate memorial offering to Mr. Liu Xiaobo placed on the chair such as flower, candle, paper or photo. The gesture of the 3 fingers is a tribute to the lifelong struggle of Dr. Liu Xiaobo. What he said on 13 January 2000, “In order to achieve negative liberty, one must have the determination to fight positively”, was a portrayal of his own life. Since the 89’ Democratic Movement, through the formation of the Independent Chinese Pen Centre and till Charter 08, he had fought for a China without hatred, without enemies and without lies through 30 years of resistance. Only through resistance can we achieve freedom, only through resistance do we have hope. The three fingers of resistance, freedom and hope is a symbols of his life, and a symbol of our determination to continue his fight.
