Give Cubs a Chance

The Issue

In the springtime, black bears emerge from hibernation with young cubs. Being chased by a pack of hunting dogs is one of the many stresses they may encounter at this time. It is a time for them to forage, gain strength, and train their young.  However, WV Department of Natural Resources regulations currently allow WV resident bear-hunters to train their dogs to chase bears during this time and throughout the year.

The practice of training packs of hunting dogs on bears during the spring and summer stresses the bears and other wildlife at this vulnerable time.  When chased sows with young cubs can be separated, resulting in orphaned or killed cubs. We are petitioning WV DNR to restrict training with bear dogs in the spring and summer months when bear and all wildlife are raising their young.
