The Issue
TO THE SONOMA COUNTY COMMUNITY AND SUPPORTERS OF OUR PETITION FOR STUDENTS OF WRIGHT SCHOOL DISTRICT (JX WILSON ELEMENTARY, ROBERT L STEVENS ELEMENTARY, AND WRIGHT CHARTER SCHOOL):
Hello! Let me start with thanking you for your time and support with this matter. The district currently has more than 1,500 students. Each class currently has between 20-24 students, and they are planning on having up to 30 students per class.
The Wright School District has been meeting to discuss changes for the 2023-2024 school year. One of the biggest changes that they are looking to implement is combining up to 9 classes like kindergarten and T-K, where the T-K kids are using play-based learning and kindergarteners have an academic curriculum to follow. The other classes they want to combine are 5th and 6th grade, where these two classes are each having their own curriculum, expectations, and issues. One is almost off to middle school, and the other may still be adjusting to higher academic standards.
The teachers at the 5/18/23 board meeting all touched my heart with their letters, expressions of frustration and lack of support, and hopelessness expressed when trying to help each and all students succeed with limited resources.
It breaks my heart to see these kiddos, who have already gone through the pandemic mess and are so behind, get even more restricted access to support. Increasing class sizes to almost max capacity by the law to "meet their numbers" is just not sitting right with me. Can you imagine? Children in our district currently don't have a special education instruction classroom, where other districts have moderate special education classes and severe special day classes. Instead, we are offered RSP services at the school, which may work for some families. However, when special needs students are put in classrooms with the current sizes, some of these kids still have problems fitting in and adjusting to working alone. Many times, these kids do not get the support needed by the teacher at all times because there's sometimes 20+ kids per teacher. Adding more children per class will make these kids' experience much more difficult and their learning chances would be slimmer. PLEASE HELP US HELP THESE KIDS.
Having experience working with special needs children in school and having one myself, I cannot just sit here and pray for the best. We, as parents and residents of Wright School District, need to come together, attend board meetings (as much as possible), and stand up for our future's rights. These children are our future. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP ON OUR KIDS. Even if you don't have children in the district, these kids will be the foundation of our future generations.
If you'd like to help support us and you live in the district or have a child in our district, please sign the petition and we will present these signatures to the board at the 6/22/23 meeting. If you're able to also come to the meeting in-person, that would be helpful as well so they can see that people are informed of what is going on.

¡Hola! Permítanme comenzar agradeciéndoles por su tiempo y apoyo con este asunto. El distrito actualmente tiene más de 1,500 estudiantes. Cada clase tiene actualmente entre 20 y 24 estudiantes, y planean tener hasta 30 estudiantes por clase.
El Distrito Escolar de Wright se ha estado reuniendo para discutir los cambios para el año escolar 2023-2024. Uno de los mayores cambios que buscan implementar es combinar hasta 9 clases como kindergarten y T-K, donde los niños T-K están usando el aprendizaje basado en el juego y los niños de kindergarten tienen un plan de estudios académico que seguir. Las otras clases que quieren combinar son 5º y 6º grado, donde estas dos clases tienen cada una su propio plan de estudios, expectativas y problemas. Uno está casi fuera de la escuela intermedia, y el otro aún puede estar ajustándose a estándares académicos más altos.
Los maestros en la reunión de la junta del 5/18/23 tocaron mi corazón con sus cartas, expresiones de frustración y falta de apoyo, y desesperanza expresadas al tratar de ayudar a todos y cada uno de los estudiantes a tener éxito con recursos limitados.
Me rompe el corazón ver a estos niños (que ya han pasado por el desastre de la pandemia y muchos están tan atrasados) obtener un acceso aún más restringido al apoyo. Aumentar el tamaño de las clases a casi la capacidad máxima por ley para "cumplir con sus números" simplemente no me sienta bien. ¿Se imagina?
Los niños en nuestro distrito actualmente no tienen un aula de instrucción de educación especial, donde otros distritos tienen clases moderadas de educación especial y clases severas de días especiales. En cambio, se nos ofrecen servicios de RSP en la escuela, que pueden funcionar para algunas familias. Sin embargo, cuando los estudiantes con necesidades especiales son colocados en aulas con los tamaños actuales, algunos de estos niños todavía tienen problemas para convivir con los de mas niños y adaptarse a trabajar solos. Muchas veces, estos niños no reciben el apoyo que necesita el maestro en todo momento porque a veces hay 20 + niños por maestro. Agregar más niños por clase hará que la experiencia de estos niños sea mucho más difícil y sus posibilidades de aprendizaje serían más escasas. POR FAVOR, AYÚDANOS A AYUDAR A ESTOS NIÑOS.
Teniendo experiencia trabajando con niños con necesidades especiales en la escuela y teniendo uno yo misma, no puedo simplemente sentarme aquí y orar por lo mejor. Nosotros, como padres y residentes del Distrito Escolar de Wright, debemos unirnos, asistir a las reuniones de la junta (tanto como sea posible) y defender los derechos de nuestro futuro. Estos niños son nuestro futuro. POR FAVOR, NO DEJEN DE PELEAR POR NUESTROS HIJOS. Incluso si no tiene hijos en el distrito, estos niños serán la base de nuestras generaciones futuras.
Si desea apoyarnos y vive en el distrito o tiene un hijo en nuestro distrito, firme la petición y presentaremos estas firmas a la junta en la reunión del 6/22/23. Si también puede asistir a la reunión en persona, eso también sería útil para que puedan ver que las personas están informadas de lo que está sucediendo.
