“Individuals may suffer but the country has to be placed higher.”
Delhi High Court today directed WFI to give a hearing to Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, who has sought a selection trial. Sushil shall be given a hearing by the President, Vice President, Seceretary and coach of WFI.
Sushil's counsel told to court that Sushil was injured when a Wrestling Championship was held last year in which Narsingh had won the bronze medal. Sushil's counsel said that Sushil has received the funds for his training even after Narsingh has won a bronze medal in championship. He said WFI is not giving the proper response and has failed to follow the guidelines.
Countering to it WFI's counsel claimed that Sushil was avoiding wrestling with Narsingh thats why he has not participated in Wrestling Championship. He said that Wrestling Championship is far tougher than the Olympics. Also he said WFI have already decided to send Narsingh for Rio'16. Responding to this statement of WFI's counsel, bench said " You can call Sushil and explain him the decision".
Responding to this, WFI's counsel said, " Sushil knows everything but he is not ready to understand." To this judge Manmohan said, "This man(Sushil) has also got laurels for the country. The reasons which he is giving are quite worthy and I am not finding any malafide in what he is saying. He said referring to the issue that "The Indian cause will suffer."
"The Indian cause has to be placed on a higher pedestal. Individuals may suffer but the country has to be placed higher." I will only interfere as a last resort. Let WFI decide this first as they are the experts in this field.”
According to the rules, a quota belongs to the country and not to a particular wrestler and, thus, it was expected that a trial would be held in the contentious 74kg category to chose between Sushil and Narsingh.
The court has now fixed the matter for further hearing on May 27 2016.
