Hello Rugby Family,
In less than a week since posting our petition in opposition to World Rugby’s proposed ban on trans women athletes, we’ve seen an incredible outpouring of support with over 12,000 signatures and hundreds of comments from people around the globe -- from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much!
We wanted to write a quick update here on our next steps and the timeline we’re facing, as well as how you can help us keep our momentum. Currently, the proposed policy changes are out for feedback and comment to all of the National Unions -- the governing bodies for each member country under World Rugby. They have until August 31st to provide their feedback before World Rugby will eventually vote on the proposal in November.
With such a tight turnaround, now is the time to make our voices heard and put pressure on leaders in our home countries to stand up against transphobia and discrimination in rugby. But we can’t do it alone.
You can help us by visiting this link, scrolling through, and completing some or all of the following actions:
1. Share this petition with your friends and family to tell World Rugby to reconsider its recommendation and remain aligned with the IOC guidelines on the inclusion of transgender athletes.
2. Share your positive personal stories about your inclusive rugby experiences. Trans and non-binary folks are encouraged to share the impact the rugby community has had on your lives.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Use the following hashtags to flood social media: #TackleTransphobia #LetUsPlay #RugbyForAll. Post to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok, anywhere and everywhere. Tag @worldrugby and @usarugby and let them know you do not stand with this ruling.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. If you are in the United States, recruit your club, geographic union, society, or organization to sign our open letter to the USA Rugby Board of Directors.5. Sign the ACLU petition for trans inclusion in sports, because this isn’t just happening in the rugby community. Dozens of states have introduced bills that would ban girls who are trans from participating in girls’ sports teams.
As a trans woman who found a supportive and welcoming community in rugby, it has moved me deeply to read all of your comments and messages. Let’s keep this game open to all players, as it was intended to be!
With you,
Grace McKenzie
