Committee to Protect Journalists
5 May 2020
On behalf of the Committee to Protect Journalists, thank you for supporting the #FreeThePress campaign. With your help, thousands of people came together to urge world leaders to free journalists imprisoned for their work, and we have already seen a few releases. Just over a month ago, in The Washington Post, we kicked off the campaign with an open letter to world leaders calling for the immediate and unconditional release on humanitarian grounds of all journalists behind bars. In the days that followed, more than 190 organizations partnered with us to send letters, videos, articles, op-eds, and a petition on social media platforms and in news outlets spanning the world. Some impacts and activities of the campaign: - More than 11,000 signatures on our petition - A powerful op-ed by CPJ Advocacy Associate Yeganeh Rezaian, recounting her experience of being imprisoned while a journalist in Iran - Public statements by the U.S. State Department and members of the U.S. Congress calling for the release of imprisoned journalists - Joint letters to leaders in Kyrgyzstan, Bahrain, Cuba, and throughout Asia and Africa, as well as the top official for the European External Action Service - The release of at least four journalists, in Iran and Ethiopia These successes are a direct consequence of the collective work of partner organizations and individuals like you. Today we sent the petition to those leaders who still have journalists behind bars and sent a letter calling on the U.N. Secretary General to make the release of imprisoned journalists a priority. The Committee to Protect Journalists will continue to report on attacks against the press and to pressure world leaders to release jailed journalists as COVID-19 continues to spread. We urge you to do the same, and keep using the hashtag #FreeThePress. Thank you again for your support.
