Because of Covid, in May 2020 the Chinese government has formed a new agency to crack down on illegal meat and wildlife trade: The Agricultural Comprehensive and Integrated Law Enforcement Team.
Its goal is to form a fully integrated team to improve the efficiency of enforcing the laws and the penalty uniformly. In the past, people usually got the run-around when reporting any illegal, unsafe food practice.
Yulin, who has always been behind any modern developments in Chia, finally just opened its local branch in mid-April this year and had a big ceremony (see photo below). They are way behind other major cities in China which had opened their branches in 2020. Yes, we are very skeptical if and how this new office will do to crack down on the dog and cat meat trade in Yulin, but we also believe that any steps toward making illegal traders (wildlife, or dog and cat) nervous and worried, is a "win" for us. That's exactly why our team in Yulin wanted to send us this news and why we are sharing it with you.
Thanks to your support, Duo Duo Project is the only organization that stays in Yulin 365 days of the year, not just during the "festival". Some people have asked us why we picked the toughest bone to chew. Because we firmly believe that, as in the Domino Effect, once Yulin goes down, the rest of the dog meat trade will go down worldwide - and for good.
