The fight against this inappropriate development is not over. Our meeting held on 3rd July had over 50 residents attend. A strong show of support considering school holidays. Many more people had wanted to come but were unavailable. There was overall interest in following this through to VCAT to challenge the faulty decision made by Banyule City Council to approve this development. Of course, council was never going to refuse this application, as they had sold the property more than 2 years ago, and are awaiting settlement of the property next year. Money talks! and their decision was predetermined by the sale. Best practice for local government dictates that council disclose the purchaser when considering the offer. However, as our council did not disclose in 2013, I can only surmise they were aware that there would be a public outcry, and create a real opportunity for the residents to change the outcome... Council, intelligently deciding that they were not prepared to risk losing the funds for "Emerald City" More specifics about their disclosure (or lack thereof) to come... (Did you know Emerald City has a whole spare floor costing $8m ??) Also FYI - council is not legally obliged to take the highest offer and in certain circumstance can actually transfer land without any monetary consideration.
