There’s been some great discussion in local groups, so I wanted to share a quick reality check for anyone wondering “is the vegan market even big enough to matter?”
Here’s what the data says:
- 🥦 The Australian vegan food market is valued at around $690 million in 2024, projected to reach $1.4 billion by 2034, that’s solid growth of nearly 8% a year.
- 🌱 Broader “plant-based” food sales are projected to grow 11% annually, reaching nearly $1 billion by 2033.
- 👩🌾 Only about 1–2% of Australians identify as vegan, but far more are flexitarian, vegetarian, or plant-curious, meaning they buy these products regularly.
So, yes, this is a real and growing market, and those dollars will simply shift to Coles, Aldi, or specialty stores if Woolworths keeps shrinking its range.
This isn’t about attacking Woolworths, it’s about collaboration. We’re asking them to engage with the community through a Vegan Product Advisory Group so they can stock what people actually buy, reduce waste, and grow this category sustainably.
