10% Land Dedication of Daman Farm as a Natural Preserve

The Issue

Daman Farm is a 57 acre property located in St. Vital Perimeter South, Winnipeg. It is a thriving habitat of mature oak forest, wetland, riparian and grassland area that supports an abundance of wildlife. This property has been conditionally sold to A&S Homes pending an application to rezone and subdivide the land into 23 lots.

We are extremely concerned over the impact this development will have on our wildlife populations that we value, and the biodiversity that we observe here is a testament of the healthy and thriving habitat that exists within the land. The land contains habitat that supports monarch butterflies, migratory and non-migratory birds, deer, and wild turkeys. Terrestrial wildlife such as coyotes, fox, marten, raccoons, rabbits, skunks, and woodchucks utilize the burr oak forest for foraging and denning. The property hosts a breeding pair of bald eagles that call this property their home from approximately February to November and have traditionally nested here for years. The land also supports bats, barred owls, snowy owls, various birds of prey species and northern leopard frogs. Rezoning and subdividing this property will destroy critical habitat.

For a typical residential development project in Winnipeg, a developer is supposed to dedicate at least 10% of the land as a public reserve or natural area. However,  the City of Winnipeg agreed to receive a 10% dedication fee in lieu of dedicating land. We want the City and A&S Homes to revisit the land dedication and set aside 10% of the total land area (5.7 acres) as a natural reserve that would be left in its natural state (no sod, benches, parks, etc.) and that this reserve should be quality wildlife habitat as determined by the City's Natural Services branch.

St. Vital Perimeter South is losing natural areas that are quality habitat to development, without any land dedicated to green space. In the Winnipeg Draft Park Strategy, our community is excluded from any planning for future parks or natural areas. Please help our community preserve 5.7 acres of quality habitat. We need signatures by April 26th to present at a public hearing.
