Karen Serrano Roberts came to the United States undocumented as a child. Later, she fell in love, married and, up until 2021, she and her husband had been raising five children.

To obtain a Visa, Karen followed the directions of a well intentioned, although uninformed, attorney who advised Karen she had to return to her ancestral home in Mexico to get legal. In July, 2021, Karen received notice of an interview at the Embassy. Prior to leaving, Karen was informed she had everything needed for the interview and the process would take just a few days. Karen would depart and go through various parts of the process before the Consulars Interview.

After Karen's interview, she was informed of important documents missing and therefore was denied access back home to the United States where she has lived the majority of her life. The missing documents were then sent and yet, Karen was still denied access.  This is where the nightmare became reality.

Since 2021, Karen has been stuck in Mexico waiting for her paperwork to weave its way through a lengthy process. We have a husband at home raising a family and struggling to support Karen's living arrangements and sustainability in Mexico. We are entering month 18 of Karen being away from her husband and five children.

This petition seeks to express the extreme hardship to the family and address needed reform to our Immigration Laws that will streamline the process while providing clear upfront directions on what type of waivers are required based on individual circumstances. An expedite of Karen's I-601 application, after an already extended amount of time, is requested and warranted.
