TXDOT MADE REAL COMMITMENTS ON SH 46 WEST. HERE IS WHAT THEY SAID.

Yesterday, May 26, 2026, TxDOT District Engineer Charles Benavidez presented the agency's safety plan for SH 46 West to the Kendall County Commissioners Court. You can watch the full meeting here and read the presentation for yourself:

This community has been asking for physical improvements that address the crash type killing people on this road. Yesterday TxDOT committed to several of them. Here is what was confirmed:

WITHIN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS — SUMMER 2026: Pre-formed rumble strips will be added to the centerline along the entire 11-mile corridor using TxDOT's existing pavement striping contract. This is happening now.

WITHIN THE NEXT TWO YEARS — FUNDED AND IN DESIGN:

• The entire 11-mile corridor will be resurfaced with new hot mix overlay
• A 4-foot centerline buffer will be added corridor-wide as part of that resurfacing
• Jersey barriers will be installed at Webster's Corner — the location with the highest crash concentration in Kendall County
• Turn lane improvements at seven intersections in both Bandera and Kendall Counties

TxDOT confirmed this project is already funded. It is in design now. The environmental clearance is the critical path item and is scheduled to be complete by April 2027, with a bid date of September 2027 and construction starting in early 2028.

THE 4-FOOT CENTERLINE BUFFER IS THE BIGGEST WIN. For months this campaign has argued that a physical buffer between opposing lanes of traffic is the most important near-term improvement on this road. 47% of the fatal and serious injury crashes in Kendall County on this corridor are head-on collisions. TxDOT confirmed that number in their own presentation yesterday — and committed to addressing it directly with the centerline buffer.

THE LONG-TERM FIGHT CONTINUES.

The four-lane divided highway — the permanent solution — still has no committed funding and no committed timeline. The feasibility study is approximately 60% complete and will resume this summer with stakeholder meetings planned for winter 2026 and public meetings planned for winter/spring 2027. That fight is not over.

We are also pushing hard to compress the construction timeline. The environmental clearance process is entirely within TxDOT's control. We are working with state legislators, county commissioners, and federal contacts to support every avenue for moving faster. Every month matters on this road.

1,220 of you signed this petition and made everything that has happened possible. The rumble strips coming this summer, the jersey barriers at Webster's Corner, the 4-foot centerline buffer — none of this happens without 1,220 people refusing to look away.
