Petition updateWiden State Highway 46 between Boerne and Pipe Creek

TXDOT SHOWED UP. NOW WE NEED THEM TO MOVE FASTER.

Yesterday was a significant day for SH 46 West.

TxDOT District Engineer Charles Benavidez presented the agency's safety plan to Bandera County Commissioners Court yesterday morning. TxDOT will present the same plan to Kendall County Commissioners Court on May 26.

What TxDOT has committed to:

TxDOT has secured $7 million in federal funding for intersection improvements at several high-crash locations in both counties. Design is underway and construction is expected to begin in early 2028. TxDOT has also confirmed that a feasibility study for a potential four-lane divided roadway is actively running.

That is progress. And we acknowledge it.

What Commissioner Konvicka said — and he is right:

Bandera County Commissioner Troy Konvicka said it plainly after the presentation: "I feel we need to get this process moving forward quicker, and instead of putting a band-aid on a short-term solution, let's figure out what the long-term solution is and get it started today."

He is right. Four more years before construction begins on intersection improvements is four more years of people driving this road with nothing physical between them and oncoming traffic. The intersection project — as meaningful as it is — addresses a crash type that has injured people but has not killed anyone on this corridor. Every fatality on SH 46 West happened on the open road.

What we are still pushing for:

The 4-foot centerline buffer is in TxDOT's intermediate plan. The engineering is substantially complete. It does not require significant right-of-way acquisition. We are pushing TxDOT to begin that improvement concurrent with — not years after — the intersection project.

TxDOT has also indicated it will review the possibility of jersey barriers at Webster's Curve. That is a specific location where a DPS Corporal warned in writing that a fatal crash was coming.

May 26 — Kendall County Commissioners Court — Be There.

TxDOT will present the same plan to Kendall County Commissioners at their regular meeting on May 26. If you can attend, please do. Your presence in that room sends a message that this community is still watching and still expecting more than a four-year timeline.

1,185 of you signed this petition and made everything that has happened possible. Keep sharing. Keep pushing.

This road does not fix itself — but it is closer to being fixed today than it was 52 days ago.
