We’ve now reached 200 signatures, and I cannot thank you all enough for standing with us in this important fight. Every signature represents a voice calling for a fairer process when it comes to heritage listings, and I’m incredibly grateful for the growing support we’ve received.

What’s Happening So Far:

 • DCC’s Heritage Listings: The Dunedin City Council has proposed to list over 113 properties on the heritage schedule, with no requirement for homeowner consent. This could place a significant financial burden on many families, with increased maintenance costs, decreased property values, and additional red tape for any renovations.
 • Broader Impact: Cities like Hamilton are looking to list 3,000 properties, and many other councils across the country could soon follow suit unless we make our voices heard.

The Real Impact on Homeowners:

If a property is listed without consent, homeowners can face:

 • Decreased property value (up to 10-30%)
 • Increased insurance premiums (up to 25% higher)
 • Costly consent processes for renovations and ongoing maintenance
These financial burdens can be devastating for families, especially those with high LVR mortgages or tight budgets.

What’s Next:

We need to keep pushing for:

 • Homeowner consent before heritage listings are enforced.
 • Alternatively, if the council deems a property of significant heritage value, they should purchase it at market value, ensuring that homeowners aren’t left carrying the financial burden.

Without a cost to councils, there’s no incentive for them to scrutinize listings properly. If the council had to purchase properties, they would take much more care in deciding what is truly worthy of protection, rather than listing homes arbitrarily.
