Whole Foods: Stop using toxic receipts

The Issue

Did you know that most receipts used by major retailers contain chemicals linked to infertility and cancer? Working at Change.org, we're right across the street from Whole Foods and eat there every day. We're concerned that while many of us make an effort not to buy products with chemicals like BPA, companies still hand them out every day at the cash register.

Join us in calling on Whole Foods to stop using receipts with BPA or BPS in them.

Last year, a study by the Ecology Center revealed that 93% of receipts from major retailers and restaurant chains tested positive for BPA or BPS, chemicals which interact with estrogen and thyroid hormone receptors have been linked to infertility, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and more.

The two of us go to Whole Foods every day for lunch, and see cashiers and customers handling these dangerous chemicals. Every time someone holds a receipt, these chemicals are absorbed into their bloodstream through the skin.

Whole Foods describes itself as “America’s Healthiest Grocery Store,” and claims to be a long-time leader on limiting chemicals like BPA, yet still prints receipts with BPS in them. Best Buy has already switched to non-phenol receipts and Trader Joe’s has vowed to switch over by the end of 2018. Setting an even-higher bar, companies like Apple, GNC, and In-N-Out solely offer digital receipts.

These receipts are bad for our health, and bad for the environment. Tell Whole Foods to live up to its name, and stop using receipts with BPS.
