Whittier College Students, Faculty and Staff to observe MLK Day as a National Holiday
Whittier College Students, Faculty and Staff to observe MLK Day as a National Holiday
The Issue
According to President Barack Obama: to draw lessons of our past we [must] ensure [that] the flame of justice continues to shine. By standing up for what we know to be right and speaking uncomfortable truths, we can align our reality closer with the ideal enshrined in our founding documents that all people are created equal. In remembering Dr. King, we also remember that change has always relied on the willingness of our people to keep marching forward. If we do, there is no mountaintop or promised land we cannot reach. Whittier College, should abide by this statement, and honor Dr. King's legacy and values by impeding class and work and participating in community service, amongst our campus. We will first start by boycotting work and class on this prospective date, and coming together to build our community through service. This federal holiday should be forever included within our Human Resources holiday schedule. With this, we wish that action will be taken in the future and we will no longer dishonor Dr. King by having class and open business hours on this day.
