Petition updateWhen a Verdict Determines Who Can Run- A Call to Protect Taiwan’s DemocracyOn the Ground in Taiwan: Justice Field Trip Shows Ko’s Unjust Detention
H TsaoCA, United States

Aug 29, 2025
Dr. Ko Wen-je, the former Mayor of Taipei and founder of the Taiwan People’s Party, has now been detained for 356 days.
Despite no concrete evidence presented against him, and with all witness testimony supporting his innocence, he remains behind bars. The court has repeatedly extended his detention, ignoring the fact that his rights, and Taiwan’s democratic values, are being violated.
This prolonged and unjust pre-trial detention highlights deep concerns about political interference and judicial fairness in Taiwan.
We call for Dr. Ko’s immediate release and demand that Taiwan’s judiciary uphold the rule of law, protect due process, and respect human rights.
